I guess it comes down to one's personal requirements.

1) First, I require support for Error correcting memory.
Sure memory is getting more reliable all the time. However, what good is one's system if your hardware can't assure you that what you retrieved is actually what you stored?

It is with much dismay that I watch Intel drop ECC support, first from many of their desktop chipsets, and now from whole lines of processors (i7, i5, i3...)
It is my opinion, that a system built without ECC support is suitable only as a toy for gamers.

2) Second, I prefer a processor with a max TDP of 80 watts.
The temperature in my room runs about 82F in the summer.I don't like the idea of
water cooling electrical parts, so I stay with Air-cooling. From past builds, I notice that if processor TDP is much over 70, the fans rev up to a point where it is troublesome to keep the case at a tolerable noise level.

3) I need enough ooomph (GHz) in a single core to play games.Still to this day most games are primarily single threaded.Yes, one can open up task manager and see all four cores active.What most people are witnessing though, is not two processes being dispatched simultaneously, but rather a single process being quickly redispatched on each of the different cores.Very seldom will you find a game that takes more than 1/2 of processing power of a dual core, or more than a quarter of the processing power of a quad.

4) I Want a quad for those small occasions where I might want to do something with video. Video processing software has been optimized for multiple cores, and having one will cut down on rendering time, compression and the like.

5) A reasonable price.

After considering all my options, the 2.6 GHz AMD Phenom II X4 910e @ $189 and only 65 watts (TDP) seems to suit me best.

I have had it for about two months, it runs cool and have experienced no hiccups.

Paired with an ASUS M4A89TD Pro/USB3 motherboard.
